Do you suffer from Dental Phobia?

Dental Phobia

Does the thought of the dentist make your skin crawl?

Well, you are not alone, it is believed 9-15% of people avoid seeing a dentist because of a dental phobia and even more who suffer from dental anxiety or fear.

It is not uncommon to not look forward to your dental appointments, even thou most procedures are not painful, and the support teams are friendly, just having a check up can cause some people to feel stressed.

Most of us can live with some anxiety about going to the dentist, but for those with a dental phobia, the thought can be terrifying. Dental phobia can be treated, without treatment it is likely to get worse.

Dental phobias are common, some patients will put off routine care for years or even decades due to their phobia, putting up with gum infections, pain and broken and unsightly teeth.

Avoiding the dentist because of a dental phobia will only cause your dental needs to be more extensive and more expensive. It is known people with a dental phobia are at higher risk of gum disease and early tooth loss.

Discoloured and damaged teeth may make you feel insecure and self-conscious about your smile. Do you smile less or cover your mouth when speaking or having a photo taken.  Some people can also become embarrassed about their teeth which may cause problems in their personal and professional life.

Cause of Dental Phobia

We often see people who say they suffer from a dental phobia, Dr Henry will always take the time to listen to your concerns, he will never make you feel bad about your phobia or about the condition of your teeth.

Often people are anxious about FOUR main things:

Pain – This is justifiable, nobody wants to feel pain. Dr Henry doesn’t want you to feel pain either, and that is why we would never continue with dental treatment that was uncomfortable.

Loss of Control – When you don’t have control of a situation it can cause stress and anxiety. When you visit Dr Henry he will always make sure you are fully aware of the dental treatment, he will always listen to you and make sure you know what is happening during your appointments.

Embarrassment – You may feel ashamed or embarrassed having someone looking inside your mouth, dental treatment requires physical closeness, your mouth is a very intimate part of your body. Dr Henry will never judge you or make you feel bad about the condition of your teeth.

Negative experience – If you have had pain, discomfort or been made to feel bad during a previous dental procedure, we are sorry. The team at Red Hill Dental go to great lengths to make sure this will not happen at our Paddington dental practice.
