What is a Crown

A dental crown is one option for restoring chipped, decayed, discoloured, broken, or misaligned teeth. It is a tooth-shaped ‘cap’ that fully covers the part of your tooth above the gum line, the part you can see. Unlike a filling that only fills in or repairs a part of your tooth, a crown actually becomes your tooth’s new outside layer covering the entire surface.

Crowns are permanently placed on your teeth with cement. Its main purpose is to regain full function of your tooth, so it works just like a natural tooth. You may need a crown to strengthen a damaged tooth or to improve the appearance, colour, shape or alignment of your tooth.

Dental crowns can be used to restore single teeth or multiple teeth, and may attach to bridges or dental implants. Depending on the health of the underlying tooth, crowns can last for many years.

At Red Hill Dental, our innovative 3D dental CAD/CAM technology can construct crowns, bridges, and veneers in a single visit. Click here for more info about Same-Day Crowns.

A patient recently saw Dr Henry to have a tooth restored with a Dental Crown. See more about this case here – Dental Crown.

A Dental Bridge is used to replace one or more missing teeth. It spans or bridges the space where the teeth are missing. Missing teeth can cause your existing teeth to shift and affect the functionality of your bite and smile.

Dr Henry sees patients who are often complaining about speech impediments, moving teeth, and problems with their jaw joints due to missing teeth. Dental bridges are used to replace missing teeth, just like implants or dentures.

There are several types of dental bridges to choose from. Dr Henry will discuss the options with you and work out a treatment plan that will be the best replacement for your missing teeth.

The process of fitting a bridge generally requires two to three visits. A temporary bridge will be placed to protect your teeth during the first visit, and a permanent bridge (constructed by our dental laboratory) will be securely placed during your second visit.

What are Veneers?

Veneers are ultra-thin shells of ceramic material that are bonded to the front of your tooth.

Typically, Dental Veneers are ideal for improving the appearance of your front teeth, such as closing any gaps between your teeth, lengthening small or misshaped teeth, or whitening stained or dark teeth.

When teeth are chipped or beginning to wear, Dental Veneers can protect them from further damage, and help to restore their original appearance and function.

Dental Veneers are often thought as a cosmetic dental treatment. However Dental Veneers do have other benefits such as protecting the surface of your teeth. When the outer layer of your tooth becomes worn down you are more likely to have cracks and chips, and this uneven alignment may result in you grinding your teeth.

If you have several dull or discoloured teeth, misaligned or chipped teeth you may be a candidate for Dental Veneers. To find out if dental veneers are the right choice for you talk to Dr Henry. He will discuss all the available treatment options and evaluate your condition to give you the best recommendation.

Dr Henry recently completed a smile makeover with Dental Veneers. See more about it here – Cosmetic Dental Veneers.
