Problems We Solve
Frequently Asked Questions
How frequently should I book a dental exam and cleaning?
For most people, visiting your dentist every 6 months for Dental Exam & Hygiene helps maintain oral health and detect issues early. Identifying decay or gum changes in their initial stages allows for simpler and more affordable treatments. If you are prone to gum concerns or experience a high decay rate, your dentist might recommend attending every 3 or 4 months to keep your mouth healthy and stable.
How often is it necessary to floss?
Try to floss your teeth once a day to reach the areas your toothbrush cannot. Flossing removes plaque and bacteria from between your teeth, breaking up debris that would otherwise irritate your gums. Plaque begins forming again roughly every 24 hours, so daily flossing along with brushing prevents the build-up along your gum line, protecting against tooth decay and gum disease.
What leads to tooth decay and how can it be treated?
Tooth decay develops when bacteria and food, in particular sugars, combine to form sticky plaque on teeth and gums. As these bacteria digest sugars, they release acids that erode enamel. The level of damage can vary. Minor cavities may need fillings, while more severe decay might require crowns or root canal treatment. When a tooth is badly compromised, a tooth extraction could be the final step to protect your oral health.
Is root canal therapy painful?
Despite its reputation, root canal therapy feels much like having a standard filling when performed with care. At our clinic, Dr Henry ensures you are properly numbed before treatment begins and checks continuously during the procedure. While slight tenderness may follow, over-the-counter pain relief medication usually helps ease this. We would never proceed if you were uncomfortable, and a local anaesthetic ensures minimal sensitivity throughout.
What should I do if my wisdom teeth are causing pain?
Many people experience discomfort from wisdom teeth, also known as third molars. These large back teeth usually appear between 17 and 25 years of age, though not all erupt properly. If you’re feeling pain, it may mean the tooth is impacted or trapped beneath neighbouring teeth. While not everyone needs them removed, persistent irritation should be assessed promptly. Please contact us to discuss your treatment options.
Why are my teeth becoming sensitive?
Sensitivity can develop when the outer layer of your tooth becomes thin or your gums recede, leaving the inner structure exposed. This often results in short, sharp pain when consuming hot, cold, sweet, or acidic items. Possible triggers include brushing too firmly, tooth decay near the gum line, gum inflammation, ageing, or worn fillings. Contact us to find out your suitable treatment options before sensitivity worsens.
Why do my gums bleed when I brush my teeth?
Bleeding gums are commonly linked to gingivitis, which occurs when hard plaque accumulates near the gum margin. Swollen or tender tissue may bleed easily during brushing or flossing. Without care, gingivitis can progress into more advanced gum problems, potentially affecting the supporting bone. Managing this involves a thorough deep dental clean performed professionally, and keeping up with a diligent home brushing and flossing routine to restore gum health.
What are my options for improving my smile’s appearance?
If you’re unhappy with how your teeth look, Cosmetic Dentistry offers various ways to refine your smile. With today’s technology and techniques, our team can tailor Cosmetic dental treatments to suit your goals. Depending on your needs, this might involve teeth whitening, veneers, crowns, bridges, dentures and dental implants. You can click here to see our Smile Makeover Gallery, or please click here to ask our friendly team for advice on suitable options.
Are dental implants a good solution for replacing missing teeth?
Dental implants are a reliable option for restoring missing teeth, whether you’re replacing one or several. Each implant acts as a screw-like root made from titanium, placed securely within the jawbone to hold a replacement tooth. They create a strong and lasting base for functional and aesthetic results. However, not everyone is a suitable candidate for dental implants, and your dentist will evaluate your situation carefully. Please contact us to find out your treatment options.
What leads to staining or discolouration of teeth?
Tooth discolouration happens when the outer layer of the tooth becomes discoloured due to lifestyle or dietary habits. Common causes include coffee, wine, soft drinks, and smoking, but teeth with tooth decay or infection may also appear darker. Depending on what caused it, treatment might involve a thorough dental cleaning, teeth whitening treatment, or other cosmetic approaches. Please visit us to discuss a solution; our team will assess the staining and recommend a suitable option.
Which teeth whitening option is right for me?
If discoloured or yellowed teeth make you self-conscious, teeth whitening can effectively lift stains from the enamel. At Red Hill Dental, we provide in-chair Zoom! Teeth Whitening and take-home whitening kits, both proven to safely brighten your teeth. With Zoom! Teeth Whitening, many patients experience visible whitening results within one session, revealing a lighter and brighter smile. As results vary, contact us by clicking here to discuss your teeth whitening options so we can suggest the most appropriate cosmetic approach for you.
Can adults still get braces?
Absolutely. There’s no age limit for braces, provided your gums and teeth are healthy. Many adults now seek orthodontic care to fix crowding, tilting, or shifting after an extraction. Straightening your teeth enhances both appearance and bite alignment. Treatment options include fixed braces made of metal as well as Invisalign, which uses clear aligners for a more discreet approach. To learn more, call us by clicking here to arrange a consultation for braces and find a solution suited to your smile goals.
What exactly is Invisalign?
Invisalign is a modern orthodontic approach that straightens teeth discreetly. The system includes a series of clear, removable aligners custom-made to fit your mouth, which you change every two weeks as your teeth shift gradually. With each aligner change, movement occurs little by little, week by week, until your smile reaches the desired position. This clear aligner system provides a modern solution for correcting crooked teeth and achieving better bite balance. For personalised guidance, please give us a call by clicking here.
When should I take my child for their first dental visit?
It’s ideal to bring your baby to the dentist during your regular dental visit so they become comfortable with the surroundings and sounds early on. Familiarity helps reduce dental anxiety later in life. Once your toddler’s first teeth appear, our dentist can perform an examination and provide advice on how to look after their new teeth. Early visits set the foundation for healthy oral habits as your child grows.
Why does my jaw make clicking sounds or feel sore?
The joint that controls jaw movement is the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), which functions like a hinge. If the joint tissues are stressed or inflamed, you might notice jaw soreness, clicking noises, clenching, neck tension, and challenges when speaking or eating. These symptoms may worsen with tension or nighttime grinding. For more information about how we can assist, please click here to ask our friendly dental team about available treatment options.
Note: Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.
