Happy Gas Sedation at Red Hill Dental

smiling woman at dental visitDo you have dental treatment that you’d like to get taken care of but have considerable dental anxiety? If yes, you’re certainly not alone. Many adults have had bad experiences at the dentist when they were younger. As a result, they often forego getting the critical dental care they need.

Sedation With Nitrous Oxide

Fortunately, we offer painless dentistry with conscious sedation at Red Hill Dental. Sedation is the utilisation of a drug which calms the central nervous system. Being sedated permits dentists to provide treatment while still allowing you to communicate.

Specifically, we recommend nitrous oxide, commonly referred to as happy gas or laughing gas. Before we provide sedation, we will take a full medical history and may coordinate with appropriate medical practitioners if required.

We administer happy gas through a nose mask producing a warm and relaxed sensation. You may also experience a feeling of euphoria or a tingling sensation in your arms and legs.

What to Expect

The process is simple. A small mask is placed on your nose. The amount of happy gas will vary. Our goal is to ensure you feel comfortable and relaxed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can everyone receive happy gas?

We cannot provide nitrous oxide if:

  • You can’t breathe through your nose
  • When something is placed over your nose makes you feel claustrophobic
  • You have a fear of losing control
  • You have respiratory issues such as emphysema

Is it safe to use if I am pregnant?

We do not recommend using happy gas while you are pregnant. Inhalation sedation has not been proven to be safe during the first trimester of pregnancy. If you are, or think you are, pregnant please let one of our dentists know.

Can children have happy gas?

We don’t encourage children (under 18) to have happy gas due to potential adverse side effects.

Do I need to bring anyone with me?

No. After we turn the gas off, the effects will diminish within 3-5 minutes. So, for the majority of patients, there are no long-lasting effects. You can safely return to work or drive yourself home after your treatment. If, however, you are concerned about the lasting effects or have previously had problems with nitrous oxide sedation, we recommend that you have someone else drive you home.
